While serving with the Australian infantry in France, Alberry's right leg was amputated after he was badly wounded in July 1916. When he recovered, he petitioned King George for a transfer to the Royal Flying Corps. Posted to 2 Squadron in 1918, Alberry was wounded again on 13 August 1918. Flying the S.E.5a, he claimed two Fokker DR.Is and five Fokker D.VIIs.
