Brewster-Joske traveled to England in September 1914 to join the British Army. He served as a Second Lieutenant with the 37th Division, arriving at the front in July 1915. On 15 November, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and received his Aero Club certificate on 24 September 1916. He served as an observer with 1 Squadron and a pilot with 46 Squadron, scoring 8 victories.
