In late 1917, Simonson transferred to the Australian Flying Corps after serving in the infantry on the Western Front. An S.E.5a pilot, he was posted to 2 Squadron in France on 15 May 1918 and downed one Pfalz D.XII and four Fokker D.VIIs by the end of the war.
