The son of Thomas William and Lizzie Rebecca Doran, Lieutenant Thomas Arthur Doran was a junior correspondent clerk who served with the Manchester Regiment and was seconded for duty with the Royal Flying Corps on 20 March 1917. Posted to 23 Squadron, he scored seven victories flying SPADs in France.
