As a bomber and reconnaissance pilot during 1915 and 1916, Maurice Leblanc-Smith flew the Airco D.H.2 and Vickers Gunbus while serving with 18 Squadron. In 1918, he was reassigned to 73 Squadron, where he scored all of his victories as a Sopwith Camel pilot.

A very efficient officer and successful patrol leader, who, during the late operations, has done great execution in attacking ground targets. On a recent occasion he attacked five enemy aeroplanes, destroying one and driving down another out of control.
