Arthur Ernest Newland's birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1882, at Edmonton; the 1891 & 1901 England Census both state "born about 1882" at Enfield Lock, Middlesex, the son of William and Jane Newland; his father was a "general labourer" from Westminster and his mother was from Clerkenwell. |

He is an excellent shot, and has done remarkably well as an observer, gaining the confidence of the pilots with whom he has served. He has personally assisted in shooting down five enemy aeroplanes.
