Barbreau joined the army on 16 September 1914. He transferred to the French Air Service in 1917, receiving a Pilot's Brevet on 14 May. After additional training, he was posted to N154 on 1 October 1917. After downing eight balloons, he was promoted and reassigned to Spa164 on 8 August 1918.
