Jailler joined the army in 1909, learning to fly on his own during 1911. In 1912, he transferred to the French Air Service, receiving a Pilot's Brevet the following year. When the war began, Jailler was driving a tractor instead of flying a plane. In April 1915, he was posted to MS15 but was badly wounded in combat the following month. In November 1917, following 232 hours and 27 combats in the air, Jailler was reassigned to the GDE for the duration of the war.
