The son of John Campbell and Jeanie (Hamilton) MacMillan, Norman MacMillan was educated at Allan Glen's School and the Royal Technical College. From 1914 to 1916 he served with the Highland Light Infantry in Belgium and France. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 and was a Flight Officer on 27 February 1917. Post-war he was a well known test pilot in the United Kingdom and served with the Royal Air Force during World War II. He retired with the rank of Wing Commander in 1958.
