The son of John Catto, Sr. of Dallas, Texas, Charles Gray Catto was studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland when the war began. Against the wishes of his parents, he enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps in June 1917. Flying the Sopwith Camel with 45 Squadron, Catto served in Italy and France and scored 6 victories. When the war ended, he resumed his studies and became a doctor. He was living in Waco, Texas in 1958.
