Before he was seconded for duty with the Royal Flying Corps on 22 July 1916, Hubert William Godfrey Jones served with the 4th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment. He scored 7 victories flying the D.H.2 with 32 Squadron. Shot down but uninjured whilst flying D.H.2 (A2533) on 1 October 1916. Wounded in action on 15 February 1917 whilst flying D.H.2 (A2535). Wounded again when he was shot down near Roupy on 21 March 1917 whilst flying Nieuport 17 (A305) with 40 Squadron. He then served at the Central Flying School until November 1918 when he assumed command of 19 Squadron until December 1919.
Listed as Hubert Wilson Godfrey Jones in some sources. Jones changed his name to Hubert Wilson Godfrey Jones Penperel on 18 October 1928. See The London Gazette, 4 January 1929 |

For conspicuous gallantry in action. With a patrol of three scouts he attacked a hostile formation of ten enemy machines. Although wounded, he continued the combat and drove down an enemy machine. Later, although again wounded, he remained with his patrol until the enemy retired.
