The war to end all wars, people said in 1918. Not for long. By 1919, White Russians were fighting Bolshevik Reds for control of their country, and Winston Churchill (then Secretary of State for War) wanted to see Communism 'strangled in its cradle'. So a volunteer R.A.F. squadron, flying Sopwith Camels, went there to duff up the Reds. 'There's a splendid little war going on,' a British staff officer told them. 'You'll like it.' Looked like fun. But the war was neither splendid nor little. It was big and it was brutal, a grim conflict of attrition, marked by incompetence and corruption. Before it ended, the squadron wished that both sides would lose. If that was a joke, nobody was laughing.

by Jack D. Hunter
Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Blue River Press (October 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0979924065
ISBN-13: 978-0979924064

In THE ACE, four Americans - a 20-year-old social outcast, a breezily iconoclastic Army officer, a ruthless US senator, and a guilt-ridden heiress - are inexorably drawn together in their struggles to deal with America's chaotic involvement in World War I. Their interwoven destinies lead from poverty-stricken slums through the opulence of 1917-1918 Washington, London, and Paris, and, climactically, into the Western Front's vicious aerial combat, which establishes the matrix for all air warfare to come. THE ACE is, above all, an intricate portrayal of indomitable love belabored by human frailties and the cruel pressures of war.

by Timothy M. Morrisroe
Paperback: 618 pages
Publisher: iUniverse, Inc. (August 22, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN: 0595391354

A young man fleeing his past finds himself driving an ambulance on the wesern front just as the inferno of Verdun erupts around him. Ever resilient, he transitions to flying scouts for a French escadrille. Jousting with German aces in flimsy wood and canvas aeroplanes is hard enough without having to keep up with the Bacchanalian excesses of his mates. Set over the battlefields of Europe, an Ace Minus One is authentic in its descriptions of early aviation and the colorful characters who made this period one of the most interesting in history.
