Description:

This is a Darracq wooden propellor boss, from a World War I era plane, I believe. Darracq was originally a French bicycle then car manufacturer who turned to aircraft manufacture as part of the war effort. There are a variety of identification marks on the boss which I am sure could be used to precisely identify it. These marks are shown, as best I can, in the photos and are: Darracq Motor Eng Co (down 1 side); AID 578 & AID 649 (at the start of 1 blade of the propellor); 566 (just above the 9 o'clock position). Traces of other identification on the other blade have been sawn through.
This propellor boss has been cut diagonally at the rear, and carved internally to accept a horse-shoe as a good luck token, and a hinging mahogany cover has been applied to the front. I suppose this would classify it as Trench Art. The original varnish, complete with crazing commensurate with its age remains. The boss measures approx. 9.5 in. (24 cm.) in height, and approx. 8 in. (20.5 cm.) in diameter. The internal diameter is approx. 3.5 in. (9 cm.).
For any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will do my best to answer your query.
1st class post and packing in U.K. £8.00, (standard parcel service £6.50) overseas according to destination and options selected (air, sea, insured etc.) to be confirmed at end of auction.
This is offered for auction on ebay (Item number: 270241753350). Please bid on ebay to avoid confusion. I just thought it might be of interest to users of this site. All the best.
