That is so weird that you didn't find anything on Cook! When I started this I found the same old same old. And that made me more curious & mad at the same time!
Heres what I know:
In 1928 he resigned his captaincy to become VP. & general manager of the Curtis flying service.
In 1941, he became commander of the 38th divs. of the national Guard. Waiting on his combat approval. As we have read in his letters he begged to go back to combat!! He knew that age would be a factor but very persistent to go. And so it was approved.
His tombstone reads:
Harvey Weir Cook Indiana
Col.361 AAF Base HQ & AB SQ WW1 & 2 DSC & OLC
details of death:Postal Telegraph
Died in Pacific area as result of airplane accident.
I've got papers that say died in P-39 but his son told me a P-40 & his favorite being the p-39.
Cause of death: Crashed into mountainside on New Caledonia Island in the South Pacific

I've just recently signed on to this site and interested to note discussion re H W Cook project. According to the Aerodrome Aces section (and elsewhere) Cook was KFA here in New Zealand on 25 Mar 1943 whilst flying a P-40.
I've researched and published details of all 4800+ deaths of NZ military airmen, also those of others who so died in NZ - BUT no info re Cook came to light during this work. Would have thought it rather unusual for a 51 year old to by flying a P-40, let alone killing himself in one in NZ.
Can anyone confirm details of his death, exactly where it happened, unit and circumstances?
