The realtors and developers own the legislature...and most of the city councils. In my town alone, the mayor's family acquired a square block of downtown real estate "for the public benefit" for $1.00--and turned it into part of the family auto business. Same thing happened with a large hotel development. Republican state senators have tried to shut down one of the 2 best shooting ranges in the metro area (it's 50 years old or more) so they could sell condos. Nothing came of the conflict of interest complaints: hardly anybody raised an eyebrow, it's so common anymore. And few of the corrupt officials bother to maintain the appearance of innocence--they've dropped the pretense.
