I saw a used book from 1920, (I was an idiot for not buying it) that was an analysis of US in WWI aviation, the interesting thing was the chapters about the Liberty 400hp engine. This sums up the lack of readiness for WWI by the US. This engine was this only major US contribution to aircraft design/development.
