Rickenbacker's 'Fighting the Flying Circus' has an account of Quentin Roosevelt's one victory as well as an account of his death. This is also where Karl Thom's name pops up, Rickenbacker probably picked it up from German news announcements of the time. According to Rickenbacker, Quentin got his one victory by flying unnoticed in to a formation of enemy aircraft and shooting one down.

1st Lt. Quentin Roosevelt was credited with one victory, on July 10, 1918, at 0900 hours. He claimed a Fokker (type unspecified, but probably a D.7) out of control, while flying a Nieuport 28 with the 95th Aero Squadron. The combat occurred at 5500 meters, West of Beuvardes. The text of his combat report can be found in the Gorrell Report microfilms, roll E13, frame 433. The Operations Report is on reel N4, frame 401. Most American claims of this period in the war are confirmed in the French Resumees; this one is not, probably because it was an out of control, which the French did not accept. But it is on the official USAF list of World War 1 credits.

Frank.

Lt Roosevelt had very poor eyesight. Was he allowed to become a fighter pilot only because of who his father was?
