SOMEWHERE there's a German account of the death of 1Lt Quentin Roosevelt (95th Aero) on 14 July '18. The Champlin Museum requests detailed info for a display with its Nieuport 28, which bears QR's markings. EVR's book says the Germans announced the victor as Sgt Karl Thom (J.21) but he didn't score on that date. However, Emil Thuy of J. 28 (formerly J.21) did claim a SPAD on the 14th.
Any details would be mucho appreciado.

Barrett,

'Over The Trenches' lists an Untoffizier Graper as making the only Nieuport claim on that day. I guess from that point it may help to check 'The Jasta Pilots' to determine what squadron Graper was in on 14 July.

Barrett:

Norman Franks' latest book,"The Jasta War Chronology," has the following for 14 July 1918:

Uffz C. Graper Jasta 50 Nieuport 28 Vaissant, Chambry (no time noted).

It was Graper's first victory. Franks goes on to identify the aircraft as Nieuport 6177, "14" 95th Aero, 1Lt Q. Roosevelt, KIA.

Hope this helps,

VBR,

Ira

Barrett: some years ago I did an interview on tape with one of the principle men who trained Quentin. His name was Paul Graham, and he put QR through early flight training stateside (Canada?). If that is of interest or help to the museum in their display, please let me know. Mr. Graham did speak of QR at length as I recall, though I haven't listened to the tape in years.

Mikey, Ira, & Stephen all get A grades for coming to the rescue. Will pass the word to CFM in case Doug or the staff desires further info.
Thanks again.

I read in "WW1 1914-18" that Quintin Died trying to rejoin an enemy flight. Basically, it wasn't a very glorious death. Not that any death is glorious. But it said that his nearsightedness led to the confusion and the germans picked up on it right away. Teddy said some lasting words in his memory.

Did Quentin have any kills to his credit, or was he shot down too quickly to achieve any? How long was he at the front?
