Is there anyone out there that knows where I might get blueprints to build an S.E.5a? I am interested in building my own. If you can help me, please send me an e-mail. Thank you.

I would suggest contacting Leo Opdike at WWI Aero if you are looking for blueprints for building a full or reduced size flying SE5. He is the best. You might also contact the RAF Muesum at hendon and they may be able to supply them. If you need their address, let me know as I have it at home and will be happy to supply it.

The S.E.5a was always a favourite of mine, and one I dreamed of building myself. Not easy to do properly, though, if you want to do it accurately. One comment regarding plans: I read that there were over 100 modifications made to the original design of the 5a, so I'd make darn sure I didn't start with a set representing an early version! Always wondered how many of those modifications had to do with structural integrity...

Terry, thanks for the info, I plan to contact them both.
Ed, I know there are a lot of variations on the 5a, I too wonder about the mods involving structural integrity.
I just finished reassembling a late model 5a at the Fort Rucker Army Aviation Museum. Actually having the opportunity to sit in the pilot's seat makes my desire to build one that much stronger. I think I'm pretty lucky to have the chance, and the curator thinks I'm a volunteer that is'nt being paid! Hee Hee.

A COMPLETE set of drawings for the SE5/a - down to the drawings for the prop - are still held by the Royal Aeronautical Establishment, Farnborough, Hants, UK (now known as DERA Farnborough), the original builders. You can write to them. I believe the Shuttleworth Collection, Biggleswade, UK used the set when rebuilding the nose of their a/c.

Make it a 2-seater and I'll come up with you

Cheers Brad
