I thought about throwing in the towel as far as this thread's concerned, but you folx really don't want to see that.

Barrett: the "Gotha" in "Hell's Angels" is actually a Sikorsky S-29. Hughes leased it from Roscoe Turner, then (as the filming of the movie stretched out to over a year) claimed that the lease payments had exceeded the actual value of the airplane, and argued that he owned the plane outright. Thus he refused to compensate Turner when the Sikorsky crashed while filming (the crash scene, ironically), killing one of the stunt crew.

The aerial scenes in Aces High are so-so. It's been a while since I've seen the picture, but I recall an extremely incongruous red-painted Eindekker being shot down by SE-5s which were mostly converted Tiger Moths. Oh, and Christopher Plummer going to his death in mid-1917 in the rear cockpit of an Avro 504...

Agree with you completely about Those Magnificent Men. Other than the fact that a Bristol replica is being used as a Curtiss, it's a nifty film.

"Lilac Time" has a couple of nice crash scenes, in one of which the Waco (substituting for the RFC scout) nearly runs over a female stunt-person.

The Great Waldo Pepper is on tonight. I'm gonna watch it even though it doesn't have Ursula Andress OR a towel. The portrayal of the Udet character is really well done, IMHO.

Barrett:

The Udet character was the most interesting, for me at least, of those in Waldo Pepper. But I really enjoyed watching our heroes fly off into the sunset at the end. Kind of like the Great American Western, but with rotary-engined horses.

VBR,

Ira
