Jeni,
I am guessing that cross dominant is ambidextrous. (Excuse the really bad spelling.)Which I suppose could be pretty handy.

Anyone see Lion of the Desert? And Northwest Passage sounds familiar, I used to watch a lot of old movies, actually I still do if my roomate doesn't have a cow. He hates it when I watch old westerns. And I liked Glory, and I haven't got the chance to see Gettysburg. I did like the documentary done on the American Civil War that was aired on the public channels about 8 years ago.

Northwest Passage was first a book by Kenneth Roberts. In the thirties it was made into a film; Tracy played Robert Rogers. The book was probably my first historical novel (I was about 9 when I read it).
And how could I have forgotten "Gallipoli"? And Branagh's "Henry V"?
Ahhhhh, what writing. "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers....." That scriptwriter could go far in the business.

Yes, Northwest Passage is an outstanding movie! After seeing it on TV I've been trying to remember the title for years....I would also enjoy seeing Devils Brigade again.- D.K.

Jeni, you precocious young lady, you. Methinks you're a lot more mature at 16 than I was--though I had an excuse (I was learning to fly and didn't have time for girls.)
Anyway: cross-dominant in THIS context (I disclaim knowledge of any other) means that a right-handed shooter has a left master eye, or vice-versa. I don't recall if the Pvt Ryan sniper had that problem, but it's not unusual because for some reason many lefties have a dominant right eye. To deterine your master eye, made a circle of one thumb and index finger and extend it; then place the other index finger beyond it, centered in the circle--with both eyes open. If it remains centered with your left eye closed, you have a dominant right eye. If it's offcenter with your right eye closed, you're left eye dominant.
All kinds of trivia available on-line.
NW Passage was made in 1939, the greatest year there'll ever be in movies. GWTW, Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, on and on.
Oh: new category. Best Movie Ever Made Featuring Tomahawks: "Last of the Mohicans." (French and Indian Wars) It's so good that it doesn't even need any towels to make my list.

Barret,
I tried your sighting trick, and I think I might be right dominant, but it didn't move that far off the center with the other eye. Should it be really off center or just a little?

Barrett,
I passed on the info to my friend about lefty snipers, and he claims it's all hear say. He tells me that head movement would give his position away, also contiual recoil would damage his face, not to mention the cartridge hitting him in the face, also the fact that the U.S. in WW2 would not use him as there where plenty of right handed shooters around. Could you please give me some info to shut the whining SOB up, info such as, reference material on WW2 snipers (which books) what type of weapon they used etc.

He is making my life unbearable, he won't use a computer to argue himself as he does not like them.

Regards,
Andrew Smith.

Most snipers nowadays use automatic weapons and not bolt action weapons. I think your friend may believe casings would hit the lefty in the face because he probably used an automatic/semiautomatic weapon as a sniper, not a bolt action one like WWII snipers did. I am a left handed shooter (right handed but left eye dominant so I shoot lefty) and I have never been hit in the face by a round from a bolt action rifle. I have never had any difficulty firing a bolt action rifle at all, as a matter of fact.

Regards

Does it really matter which eye you're using when you have a telescopic sight?
To use a microscope effectively, you have to be able to keep both eyes open, and ignore the input in the non-microscope eye. Wouldn't the same principle apply with a sight?

Oops, correction here, I meant to say I have never been hit in the face by a CASING from a bolt action rifle,..hehe happily, I can say I have never been hit in the face by a round from one either.
