Who is your favorite character from the movie "The Blue Max", and why?

Its been years since I've seen the movie, but there was a character (can't remember the characters name in the film or real name) who flew
the monoplane at the end (before George Pepard killed himself in it)....he came storming into the general's (or was he a Oberst) office with his face grimy with oil and declared the monoplane a death trap. I had to admire his guts and honesty since I doubt that many German Officers spoke to their superiors in such a frank manner.

Marco:That was Hauptman von Heidemann. Interestingly, in the book, HE is the one who is killed, not Stachel.

My favorite character is Stachel. Mostly because I think he is misunderstood. And because of that, he gets pushed into cheating, though he makes good on it later, when he gets enough kills to have 22, which of course makes up for the 2 he claimed that belonged to Willy von Klugermann.

It's too bad Stachel get's killed, but at least he doesn't live to become the terrible Nazi he did in the triology.

VBR,

Al Lowe

Mark;
Ursula was not a character, but I get your point.

We had a thread along these lines some months ago, but it degenerated into masculine appreciation for Ursula's towel draped around her bare, ah, neck...(Hey, it's a Guy Thing.)
My favorite was Hptmn von Heidemann, played by Karl-Michael Vogler. Interesting to note: under a different name, of course, he was the German pilot in Those Magnificent Men & Their Flying Machines, replaced by Gert Frobe as von Holstein. Vogler played Heidemann with a subdued intensity that I found credible: a fine jagdflieger (about 40 abschusse) and excellent leader who resented the cynical pragmatism visited upon him by Higher Authority in the person of James Mason.
Speaking of James Mason, et al: why is it that all movie Romans speak with a British accent???

My favorite was also Hauptman Heidemann. In the movie and in the book he was not a "von". I liked his character because even if he was a snob, he had a sense of honor and integrity about him. I for one do believe that integrity counts. Katie and her towel was one of the better scenes though.
As for the movie the dog fight during the opening credits was for me the highlight of the show. It went down hill from there.

I never really liked the motion picture very much. It made all of the characters rather two-dimensional and shallow next to the book.

Of the movie characters if I was to select a favorite, Stachel would be it. In the book, it would be Kettering or Ziegel.

The movie did have one saving grace: it caused the replica Pfalz D-III to come into existence. I cannot remember if the two Dr1's and the D-VII's were manufactured for the flick (or if they had existed before) but the Pfalz D-III was. I just wish I knew what happened to all of them.

I liked the scene that portraied MvR in the red triplane, too old and the wrong color hair and eyes

Several of the German birds from TBM appeared in other films, notably "Darling Lili." (Nobody missed the ridiculous scale SE-5s) Last I heard, years ago, some of the Fokkers and Pfalz were still flying in Europe. Maybe we'll see them again in Mutley's Frank Luke film!
