I wonder why the Albatros Company did not install a larger Mercedes engine in their single-seat fighters. They had a 220hp engine that they used in their two-seaters. Why did they not put that into say a Albatros D-2? The 220 hp engine was also a 6 cyl engine, so wouldn't it have fit?

To add to my question. Don't you think a Albatros D-2 with a 220 hp engine would have been a better fighter than the D-3 and D-5 considering the wing failures of the latters?

No, I don't, I think the DIII was the best Albatross cause the V strut , Sesquaplane format, although flawed made the DIII far more manuverable and lowered the stall speed and the DIII was much lighter than the Final product the DVa so the DV wasn't favored over the DIII.

I think we're in power-weight ratio teritory here. The Austrians sqeezed a 225hp Daimler into the D111 and regarded it as a success, but it was a squeeze. The 220 Merc is even longer and heavier, so it would have required a larger heavier airframe to accomodate it. What you end up with is a two seater sized aeroplane, so... .The over-compressed 160 eventualy delivered 185hp at a much better p/w ratio. By the time the BMW arrives who needs a DV?

Would anyone have any idea how or where I could possibly get hold of one of these engines for a DVII Replica ?

Perhaps others can help with your specific request for an actual Merc. But I do know that there are more than a couple of Jaguar engines in the air, and I recently read of a BMW auto engine beng used.

Dwight: Wasn't there a mercedes at the Wright-Pat (Dayton) fly-in, sitting on the ground in the German camp?
