Does anyone know what aerodrome Billy Bishop attacked to win his V.C. Also what Jasta(s) were stationed there when the attack took place.

Nobody knows. Not even Bishop knew; he always claimed he was disoriented and couldn't positively identify the field he attacked. There are a number of possibilities (Estourmel, etc.) but there's no solid proof to support any given candidate. (And I'm not even going to get into that *other* question...)

For a long time it was thought that Bishop attacked Estourmel. But more recently, that opinion has changed to Esnes aerodrome which is a short distance south of Estourmel.

The Jasta that was reportedly stationed at Esnes at the time was Jasta 20.

Bishop himself, never did claim which one as he admitted to being somewhat off course, and as he was flying lower than normal, not sure of his location.

VBR,

Al Lowe
