Having just recently been introduced to the excitement of flight sim's such as Red Baron 2 and Dawn of Aces, I decided to try Flying Corps. But I cannot get my joystick to work with this game. It works reasonably well with the other games I have but no go with FC. I have called their tech support, but all I get is technical jargon that 'FOGS' my brain. Something about 'Winzip', base patch and update patch! Can any of you experts out there get me going?

Winzip is a zip/unzip program for Windows. A patch is just that...a file that corrects bugs or inadequacies in software. I think what they mean is you have to download a patch file from their server and unzip it....then when you click on the executable it'll probably install the correct files in the correct directory for your game to work with the joystick.
Most software (and hardware) companies have web pages where you can download patches, drivers, etc.
Good luck.

I also had rotten problems with joystick callibration. Don't know if it's the same prob you have, but I found that if you move the joystick VERY slowly on callibration you get the full range of movement and it works OK.

One other thing came to mind......how old is the joystick. The older analog joysticks sometimes are incompatible with the newer software. I wound up having to purchase the Microsoft Sidewinder to work with Red Baron II...also, if the joystick is set for 16-bit drivers, there could be a conflict with 32-bit games.
There are 1,000 possible solutions, and only #1,001 will work.

Speaking of computer games, has anyone heard that a new game to the Red Baron sieries is coming out? It's called Red Baron 3D, and from what I can tell, it's gonna be what RB2 could have been (without the bugs and all). But enough of my rambling; go to www.redbaron3d.com to check it out.

Eric,
I dl'd the 3D upgrade to RBII. The most noticeable differences are 1) when I fire the guns, I don't lose the background detail any more, making it a lot harder to follow the movements of the enemy due to his camouflage paint and 2) the movement is not as smooth...even with an AMD K-6/233 with 64MB RAM this is going to require a better card than my Diamond Stealth. Of course, with a 4 year old generic 14" monitor, what can I expect.
(Well, I do have Dell's 800 number, now all I need is the money.)

Mike,
Do you think the 3D patch is an improvement?
I just tried it and had to uninstall the patch. I thought it was terrible. My trusty Camel in Fly Now mode suddenly had all the flying qualities of a brick. I went from downing Dr1 aces until the ammo ran out, to being shot down within a couple of minutes.
Regards, Jonathan.

Go to Preferences/Realism Setting...you can choose between authentic, intermediate, or easy. Don't forget that the patch also makes your plane more realistic, including susceptibility to even minor damage that can affect its aerodynamics. Take a look behind you and you'll often find, (surprise, surprise, surprise) that the sound of machine gun fire you heard removed your rudder.
Yup, kind of makes one nostalgic for the good old days...mass charge of Union infantry into Rebel muskets at Fredericksburg.
