On this day eight British and Australian aircraft (Martinsydes and BEs) bombed the Turkish Fourth Army HQ on the Mount of Olives,Jerusalem. On the return journey the engine of one siezed and the BE was landed behind enemy lines. Two others landed and picked up a crewman each. The formation resumed its flight then the engine of one of the rescuers seized and it too was forced to put down.No others could land there owing to the ground. The three men headed south, avoided Turk patrols and eventually walked into a Light Horse picket.Of the remaining six aircraft two now ran out of fuel.Others were able to land to pick up the crews. Thus of 14 airmen (in six two seaters and two scouts) 11 returned home in 4 aircraft and three walked.Top that.

On 22 Oct 1915 Pilot Captain White and Observer Francis Yeats Brown of the Mesopotomaian Half Flight were flying over the Turkish entrenchments at Zeur when the Renault engine of their Farman started coughing and spluttering. The power fade was so rapid , White had to land behind the enemy lines but he found upon landing the engine was still turning over but not with enough revs to get the Farman airborne.

White told the observer " We'll taxi her home. You stand up with the rifle and have a crack at any turks who have a go "

So began what was to become a 15 mile taxi across enemy lines. They were sending up plumes of dust and follwing desert ridges and tracks , when they found a raod there were 2000 Turks between them and the road . The turks baffled as to what the dust making machine was left them alone without moving. With incredible luck they found a flat area of the fornt lines , free of barb wire and went taxiing throgh the front lines. After getting through to their side of the lines , the engine decided to pick up again and White was able to take off again. They had taxiied for 15 miles total.
