There is a lengthy debate about the colors and decoration of Werner Voss's F1 Tripe. Anyone that has any insight is welcome to throw in their two cents. I've heard
1. Voss's nose cowling was a standard dark olive with his distinquishing totem face decoration in white on the front.
2. voss's nose cowling was a chrome yellow with a face on the front.
3. There is an unidentified Fokker tripe tail surface that is yellow....???? hmmm. Resides in the imperial war museum, London.

My two cents. From a picture of Voss and his F1 exp tripe, it appears that their is a dark cowling and a light, possibly white or another bright color, totem face. My theory is that the ground crew got the plane in it's original colors and instead of painting the chrome yellow onto the entire cowling, painted a face on the front in chrome yellow. I'm Voss was there when the F1 was unwrapped, I'm sure Voss was supervising the entire operation. It was probably like a child at Christmas time for him.

There's a problem with your yellow face idea. Had the mechanics used the same chrome yellow that they did on the other Jasta 10 aircraft, the face might not even be visible. If you look at other Jasta 10 photos from the time, specifically the Pfalz D-III aircraft, the chrome yellow is extremely dark. This apparently had something to do with the chemical make-up of the film at the time.

I would vote that Voss' triplane was pure factory finish with just the white face on the cowling. I know that's not very romantic, but I don't think Voss was a very regimented person and Jasta color schemes probably didn't mean all that much to him, unlike other commanders such as Flashar of Jasta 5 and Raben of Jasta 18.

Something I'm curious about is if Voss held on to that Albatros D-III all summer (1917) long and if he still had it when he arrived at Jasta 10 and if it was still in it's essentially Jasta Boelcke color scheme. All the famous photos of it are from the time of his service with jasta 5.

Well the cowling on his F1 is quite dark in the picture that I have. The face is probably white. If I had pictures of other planes of that jasta with the chrome yellow cowling I wonder if I could compare the b&w tones to see if they are the same? Of course it all depends on what time of the day the photo was snapped and if it was cloudy or not so I doubt if that is possible.

It is my belief from several minor sources that the Triplane of Werner Voss was painted mostly gray with a red cowling, standard identifying marks.
