I recall seeing (about 12 years ago on BBC television) a movie wherein Anthony Andrews played a WWI British fighter squadron commander. Does anyone know the title of this film?

I think it was" Aces High". Quite a good movie

If it was 'Aces High', it wasn't Anthony Andrews, he wasn't in it. It was Malcolm McDowell.
Andrews has only appeared in a few war movies:
Hanna's War
The Lighthorsemen
Operation Daybreak
Perhaps it was a tv drama/movie?

Hi Jack,
I think it was the drama series 'Wings' that starred Anthony Andrews. I remember watching that about twelve years ago. Wasn't his character the washed up pilot who was grounded after he cracked up?

Don't think it was "Wings." It wasn't a series, and the war was still going on when the film ended. Thanks, Jack

Gentlemen,

I've checked out a few film web sites, and it looks like "Aces High" is it. Bad news is that it is apparently not available on video. At least I now know what to look for. Thanks for the help.

No offense intended, Jack, but I don't think you're missing much. I thought "Aces High" tremendously disappointing; it's excessively melodramatic even for a WWI aviation movie, and I found those Tiger Moth SE-5s really irritating after a while.

See if you can get yourself a copy of the 1938 "Dawn Patrol" instead. It's just as melodramatic, but a lot more fun.

Could well be. What I remember (and it's a 12 year old memory) about "Aces High" was the character of the squadron commander and how he handled his pilots. As a former Marine artillery officer and veteran, I wanted to recommend it to my boy, who was recently commissioned a Marine. Agree that "Dawn Patrol" is a great classic. It was also one of my parents' favorites. (They saw it as a new release!)
