Don't forget the ever-debonair David Niven.
The remake was 1938.

Al and Vigilant...
Thanks...."Dawn Patrol" was first made in the 20's (silent) with Doug Fairbanks and Richard Barthelmess, and remade in 1938....Flynn, Niven, and Rathbone. (Trivia notes...Basil Rathbone was the best swordsman in the movies...and David Niven's batman in WWII was Peter Ustinov).

The original "Dawn Patrol" (w/ Fairbanks and Barthlemess) wasn't a silent. It was made in 1930. I suspect the remake was simply done to capitalize on Flynn's heroic reputation (not to mention the fact that the a/c were available cheap).

And 'Darn Patrol' was the lesser known but equally well made Frances Bauvier classic about the brave women who knitted warm socks for Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, and David Niven.

P.S. Rathbone was a champion epee fencer as well as actor.
