Faggot (also spelled "fagot") is descended from the Greek "phakelos" - a bundle.
Anyone of my generation who grew up in the New York area should remember the old John Gambling radio show (Second Breakfast with John Gambling), which used the following WWI song as its theme.
(Maestro, if you please...)
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
And smile, smile, smile.
While you've a Lucifer to light your fag
Smile boys, that's the style.
What's the use of worrying?
It never was worthwhile.
So,pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
And smile, smile, smile.

Hi Mike:
Was that show also called "Rambling with Gambling" or am I thinking of a later program?
Happy New Year and VBR,
Ira

Ira,
It was called "Rambling with Gambling", but I don't remember if it was the same show, or a later show that Gambling had. After all, you can't remember EVERYTHING after 45+ years.
(Well, I do remember falling in love with Shari Lewis in that same period...does that count?)

This time, you two have gone too far. Shari Lewis was MY girl. And don't you forget it!

John,
"Taffy" predated "Lambchop", and I was privileged to see both her and a teen-age
Shari at our local JCC.
Oy, to be 9 again............

For heaven's sake don't anyone mention Annette Funicelo..
Back on topic, "Over The Top" and "Sanfairyann" are still in everyday usage here.

(Content warning: this posting contains absolutely no relevance to WW I, aviation, or anything but pre-pubescent fantasies.)
OK, tell you what: you guys can claim Shari Lewis, Lambchop AND Annette Funicello. Anybody remember what an absolute babe Miss Nancy was on "Romper Room"?

This was most certainly not pre-pubescent dreaming, but just prior to the Korean War, my vote for the best knockers on TV went to Wendy Barrie.
And back to the thread: I'm wondering if this was a good idea at all. So far, I have:
"I know that you have the wind up, darling, because your sister is expecting a little stranger, but I'm giving you a French letter on my joystick!"
Yeah, it was a dumb idea.
