For the entire war there do not appear to have been any air casualties on a Christmas Day.

The only significant action was a Seaplane raid by the RNAS in 1914. Four aircraft were lost but all seven of the aircrew were rescued bu boat or submarine.

A very Merry Christmas to all,

Darryl

Not that Xmas Day 1917 was inactive, Communique No.20 has;

"Very little work was possible owing to snow and mist.116 plates were expounded and 2,300 rounds fired at ground targets."

Not a very friendly Xmas from the RFC.

You have to love the addition to the personnel library Xmas brings. Though two of my books didn't make it in time from across the pacific.

Yes I am old enough to remember that, barely though. Been picking through the Communiques and found two claims for O'Hara-Wood in it, so the one with MacLaren would make three.

Also found a Lt A.E. Matheson RFC attached to 1 Sqn AFC died on Christmas Day from Exposure. Doesnt mention the circumstances though. Poor bloke.

I put up the losses from 1 AFC at :
Both lists are from the "One Airmans War : The Personnel Diary of Joe Bull." Fascinating book and surprise surprise, part of my Xmas bounty.

Hello BillyH

Correct, although there was a second objective, to gain intelligence on German shipping in the area. I will look at Ralleigh/Jones for more information if you would like it?

regards

Darryl
