oh yeah, played the game, but in some respects find it disappointing compared to the original. I really had a blast editing those mission recorder files because it helped me develop scenes for some comic books I'm working on. The new AI flight generator is sorta random, but they exaggerated the amount of variety within mission replays and between sortie to sortie. The fact that your AI wingman can accumulate scores and get decorations is kinda cool--so I like to stick myself at the back of the flight and watch my guys chew up on the enemy (if I'm lucky)--and then watch out for approaching squadrons since if you're the active CO of a flight there is a tendency for your wingies to just sit there and stare!
I do wish there was a sim where your flights could be grounded due to weather, where the bandits didn't flutter across the sky like dying leaves in october--far too many bandits at weird times of the year, but this is supposed to be a game. It would be cool to actually see snow smothering the ground and have the ice or mud ground your flight. I guess there are cloud layers and the like here--but since I don't have the 3d card I just get the proverbial 'top layer'. I really miss the ability of running away from a flight of 9 SE5s from 74 squadron if I'm stuck in one of those wretched Fokker Triplanes.
other oddities like the Seimens Shuckardt D3 and D4 or the Fokker D8 were kinda cool--and I was really hoping they'd throw in the Sopwith Salamander and open things up for flying two-seater attack missions in Brisfits or Halberstadts-- even though I know the air war was supposedly just cosmetic-- I wish it were more closely tied in action to the events in the actual conflict--rather than a long series of CAPs and offensive patrols. Another example would be strafing trains moving en route behind enemy lines-- I know that's obscure--but I was hoping for more of mobile infrastructure behind the lines-- of course all of this would screw up the frame-rate and make it unplayable for normal human beings who don't have a Pentagon budget to spend on flight-sims-- but these were some of the things I was hoping for.
Jarrod (obviously)
PS, you don't really need to put that message in all caps-- unless you just started playing it and want everyone to know how excited you really are.

Though I don't consider it as well done a sim as RB, there is a train strafing scenerio in Flying Corps. And truck and tank convoys to destroy. Also, weather plays a more important role. The wind can actually blow you off course.
Thanks,
Steve

Speaking of RB 3D, I seeem to have a problem with spped of my plane. I can't catch anything. I have a Microsoft stick and the system seems to be working otherwise. Any suggestions?

What are you flying against what?
Thereare quite a few very good patches to improve the FM of the game and of course a few great graphics patches if you have a 3dfx card.

Take a look at http://simcombat.com/ for a pointer to most of the dowloads available.

Beery's site is a favourate download haunt of mine at http://members.xoom.com/beery1/Baron.html<...R>
Blackjack
has developed a lot of new planes for the game (Fokker D8, D6 & D2; Alb D1; Junker D1; Sopwith Dolphin; Roland D2; Caudron G4 etc) at http://members.xoom.com/rbfmc/

The
wingstrut patch is also very good (you should be able to find it at simcombat)

This game has come a long way and it has a very active online community

Vic:
My Fokker E has barely enough speed to tke off and the Albis are sluggish as well. In fact, the only two planes that seem to be able to get out of teir own way are the DVII and SPAD XIII. Thanks for the suggestions.

closing speeds and engagement times throughout are pretty big-- it still might take a good minute or so in real time to actually engage a known enemy flight even if you've got an altitude advantage and you're heading towards them. This is fairly indicative of what it must have been like at the time--some planes are just better than others--I mean if your chasing down a Roland 2-seater with anything like an altitude advantage in a Nieuport 11 you'd better hope that his base isn't too far behind enemy lines--I made that mistake once or twice. The SE5 will simply catch anything, even Spads-- I actually prefer the Albatros series at this point because they seem to me, to provide the most stable gun platform--with some practical manueverability-- I love the speed of the Spads but they're stiff-necked beasts when it comes to aiming--you have to know your shot--but the SE5 tends to wiggle a lot--that much I don't like about it--and is there anybody out there who actually prefers to fly the Fokker Dr. I, and if so, why? I just wanted to see if there is any agreement on whether this plane is just plain awful or not-- I can only score about a third of the victories that I get in any other plane-- I actually get better scores in the first generation scouts like the Moranes, N11s, and Eindeckers--because I can actually hold their noses to the target. Turning be damned, I want guns I can aim-- a good diving pass followed by an Immelmann if the cost is clear for a second run--if that burns him, great... if I had to pick one attribute for a fighter in WWI speed would be my first choice--because rate of climb usually goes with it, and from there you can pick and choose your engagements--and that's what makes you into an ace, and more importantly keeps you alive-- Camels are fun if you've got somewhere to run but lack the horsepower for my taste
so-- yeah, everything is going to be 'slow' in this game if you're used to Bf109s and Spitfires... or it could be you have a slow computer-- or that you need to trim the graphics to improve your frame-rate. It does say that performance will vary depending on the hardware in your syst.

Leo, mo chara.....
Try flying the Nieuport 11 and 17. I've done pretty well against Alb DII and DIII (and Aviatiks) with them.
Just watch out for those turns.....it's hell flying over No Man's Land with half your wing gone.
Mike
