With the retirement of cartoonist Charles Schultz, Snoopy, our greatest comic ace is no more. We'll miss his antics against the Red Baron and his leaves in Paris, where he always bought a ma'mselle an ice cream soda.
Collaterally, we will miss Charlie Brown's lusting for the "red haired girl" and his rebuffs to Peppermint Patty. However, I speculate, that as old age creeps up, he may wistfully remember Patty and secretly wish that he had taken her up on her propositions.
As for what made that U Control doghouse model fly, I think it was a combination of a powerful engine and centrifugal force, with air pressure against the roof overhang and the bottom of the structure.

John,

Did Snoopy have the Vickers or Lewis machine guns?

Sad Snoopy Fan,

Scotty: You have brought up a sore subject. But, come, let us reason together (in the manner of more prominent Forumites.)
Since his doghouse was a "Sopwith Camel" of a different physical configuration, and the only variation of Camel I can find is a night flying version with twin Lewis guns mounted on the top wing to keep muzzle flash from blinding the pilot in darkness, it stands to reason that Snoopy's "Camel" was armed with twin Lewis guns. Since nobody who witnessed this configuration is still alive, and nobody bothered to write it up, it simply hasta be this way.

I've heard from several people about this already today... I wonder how many of us got our early interests in WWI from Snoopy and his Sopwith Camel? I will miss the comic strip terribly, and still have my 1969 Snoopy on the Western Front lunch box. He made it fun. He made me think about WWI aviation when I was a kid... I'll miss him.

Long live Snoopy!

I believe it is only fitting and proper that we all quaff a root beer in his honor.

John L.,
Hallmark came out with a Snoopy Flying Ace Christmas ornament this year, so now I have him immortalized on my tree. I'll have the ornament for years to remember our American hero.

Jim

Migawd, Mac! That's "Dugout Doug" striding ashore at Inchon, and that's me cowering in the rear of the LSI!

Stephen Skinner: In that you are one of the best writers hereabouts, would you please do all of us Forumites a favor?
I have suggested to Jim "Ace" that, since he is now at Fallon and among the Navy's "Top Guns", he might be able to send a suggestion through channels. A Navy squadron has immortalized Felix the Cat as a squadron emblem. We would like a Navy Squadron to consider adopting Snoopy with his helmet, goggles and flowing scarf, sitting astride his "Sopwith Camel" (complete with bullet holes) as a squadron insignia.
Jim said that the request should contain a complete description of the emblem. I would also think that a picture would help.
So, Stephen, if you could write up a proposal of the above in a few sentences, and submit it signed from the Aerodrome Forumites to:
callowj@fttp.navy.mil
he will send it through the proper channels, and our hero will have a chance at immortality. And, if a Forumite could post a picture of Snoopy properly attired as a WW-I Ace, we would all appreciate your effort.
