This is remotely related to the thread re the noted kills by the British SE5....Is it to be considered gospel that the D.VII AND Albatross DIII had the highest number of kills and the highest kill % (I don't know if this concept goes by another term but by "kill %" I'm refering to the number of kills compared to the number of times the plane itself was shot down). How does the Camel and SPAD 13 rate with these German all stars?

I think you might want to link the DV&DVa series with the DIII. There were many more of them.

Marco,

a long time ago we had the victory numbers here in a thread. The Fokker D.VII was beating very clear every other German aircraft but loss numbers splitted in aircraft types are not available therefore the comparison is only possible between produced or used aircraft and victories and even here we have some discrepancies concerning the Fokker D.VII production numbers.

If the goal is to provide evidence of which aircraft were the most successful as fighters, I'd certainly modify the numbers of losses to exclude those from ground fire. The Camel was a simply marvelous fighter in the right hands, but suffered many losses due to its role in ground attack. The S.E. got the "high ground" because of its superior performance at altitude, and consequently did not show nearly as many losses due to ground fire.

I, too, believe the Camel was an exceptional fighter in the hands of an expert. I yhink what happened was that it was given to pilots who did not have enough training and experience to handle it. Some feel that with combat losses plus accidental deaths, the Camel cost the Allies more dead than the victories its pilots claimed.
