Hi
I have come upon a photo of members of 1AFC in Palestine receiving decorations. On the back of the photo is written 'Recieving decorations- Lt Sutherland(or could be Sunderland as the writing is faded),Capt. Spragg, Capt. Williams, Lt Hedlam and self'
I am trying to find out who 'self' is. Are there any 1AFC experts out there who know of pilots decorated together on this day.
The only other clue I have is on another photo that was with this one which mentions a J.Munns. Does anyone know if Munns was a pilot in 1AFC. If so the self could be him.

I know this is pretty obscure but any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Andrew

What date was it ? There were Lieutenants Spragg, Williams and Headlam (observer) flying with 1 AFC in April 1917. Do not know anything about a Munns. Have you looked at Cam's AFC site?

Hi Vin

I have been in contact with Cam and scanned the photo through to him. With the planes that were in the background of this photo Cam thought the date would be around January 1918.
He suggested posting a message here in case anyone might have further knowledge of the personnel of 1 AFC.

Thanks for your help

Andrew

Andrew,

My money would be on the presentation of :

Lt Leslie William 'Woodie' Sutherland's MC
Spragg's (Lt EL) ???
Capt Richard Williams' DSO
Lt Eustace Slade Headlam's ???

And your mystery man : Lt Edward Patrick Kenny's ??? MC

A couple of points. Williams was promoted to Major 22/5/17 (before 1AFC had Brisfits..which I presume are what Cam is using for his Jan18 date?)

Spagg was still a Lieutenant in May 1918. So Something is definately out of whack. If they are Brisfits then I would go for an error in William's rank, he had after all been around since inception and was 'C' Flight Commander, the writer may well then have refered to him as 'Captain' in error.

Sutherland's MC was gazetted 18/7/18, Kenny's MC on the 16/9/18. It is therefore likely that the presentation may well be a delayed one.

The Squadron only won one DSO (Williams') and Williams only won one medal to my knowledge.

This may put the timing of the photo at around the end of the war??

Just some thoughts....I would love to see the photo.

Cam,(if you are out there)
re a previous discussion 26/4/17 "in future we are to be called No 67 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps" The unit continued to refer to itself as 1 AFC. Williams was apparently of the opinion that "the authorities had no right to rename the unit"!!
Email to follow.

regards

Darryl
