Does anyone have EVR's dads name? I have a cover to 1st Lt. Rickenbacker with a return address to: E. Rickenbacker, 1334 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus, Ohio. U. S. A.
I, too, would be interested in any of this info. Please send to: USAS2@aol.com

Eddie Rickenbacker's father was killed in a work accident when Eddie was a kid, if I remember he was about 14 or so. Also, until he started making headlines at the front, his name was spelled Rickenbacher.
The "E" might be his mother's initial, but I don't remember her name.

Mike,
I thought his name was spelled "Richenbacher" or perhaps even "Reichenbacher"?
Can you or anybody else give exclusion?
Kind regards,
Reinout

Captain Eddie was one tough old bird. During WWII he was forced to spend time in a raft after his plane crashed in the Pacific. Does anyone havwe any more details? I remember reading about it LIFE MAGAZINE during the war.

EVR wrote three books: FTFC, of course; "Seven Came Through" (his 1942 crash in the Pacific); and his full autobio "Rickenbacker". When the B-17 got lost and ran out of fuel Cap'n Eddie became really cranky, as well he might. I believe that one crew member died before the others were rescued, and EVR's philosophy was to make the others so dad-blamed mad at him that they survived just from spite--as he intended. He went to some length to state that he was on a "top secret mission" for Hap Arnold on that trip, the purpose of which he would take to the grave. Which apparently he did.

Mike,
Thanks a lot. I checked the return address closer and, though somewhat wrinkled, it is "E. Rickenbacher", with an "h". My wife varified it as an "h" even before I explained the reason I asked. It was sent registered mail on 6/26/18. Was not post marked until July 2, 1918. It was addressed to:
1st Lt. Rickenbacker,
c/o Air Service,
American Ecpeditionary [sic] Forces.
It has handwritten: "last known adddress-Villeneuve-sur-Marne". Also, in different pen and handwriting): "APO702,c/o Capt. Pankin, 1st Pursuit Group" and also(in red ink), "Toul". Has like a rubber stamped date of AUG 4 1918 beside the "Toul".
Regards,
Steve

Read with greatest of interest your comment re. "Rickenbacker's secret". I am pretty sure I've resolved the mystery.I'll give you some thoughts on it if you e-mail me. I have it in a Chennault script I've done but want to register said material at the Screen Writer's Guild before I make it common knowledge:<leb1933@uia.net>. Regards. Lee

I'm still not sure about this. I know Eddie shot down an Albatross and I have a feeling it was Mvr.
I'll let you know what I find out.
