Richard,
I am building a Fokker Dr1 triplane. Yes, most builders use 4130 steel. Yes, we use 1/16th birch ply for the rib webs. I also use a tailwheel, brakes, and a standard stick grip instead of the ram horn grips used on the tripe and the D-7. There just isn't enough room in the cockpit for that thing.
Hope that helps.

Can't help with any more engines but I can still supply orignal instruments and other original cockpit items for most WWI German aircraft. (Rich has already shopped here)I'm out of SOME stuff but just worked a museum trade to replace some of the instruments I was out of. If you're building a replica, you may as well do it right. Most of these instruments are in unused condition. Also just bought a large collection of early FLUGSPORT bound volumes to fill in a few gaps in my collection. Will happily trade the years I now have in duplicate ( Misc year 1910-1930's). FLUGSPORT is filled with small detail information and dwgs, One of my favorite WWI German references.
