What were the colors and markings of Wolff's plane? Are there any pictures anywhere?

The plane he died in looked exactly like MvR's Fokker DrI, right down to the serial number.

There is a very good reason for that.

Wolff died in MvR's plane, which was F102 (or was it F103 - I always mix them up). The first batch of V4 triplanes that were despatched to the front ended up in the hands of the two hottest guns of the Luftstreitkräfte: MvR and Voss. MvR was of course still undergoing treatment for his head injury and was therefore unable to fly his triplane. Wolff took it out occasionally, as he was the commander of J11. During a patrol, he got separated from the other planes (Alb DVa's) and was shot down. That plane has been photographed a lot, so finding pics shouldn't be too hard. I don't have any at hand and I don't know whether the plane had been painted red or was still wearing its original green colour.

Kind regards,

Reinout

I was being flippant with my last post. I was aware that Wolff was flying MvR's triplane when he was shot down. I've heard two reasons for this. The first being MvR prefered his Albatros and the second more obvious reason, MvR was out of action.

Wolff was flying Fok 102/17 at the time of his death. If the plane had not been painted it would've looked very much like Voss's plane as Voss had only painted the cowl on his plane.

As far as I can tell both planes came from the factory with the light silverblue body with dark green streaking. From what I understand, MvR's plane had the cowl painted red, the tail section behind the maltese cross painted red (minus the rudder), and possibly the top wing painted red. The rest of the plane remained in its factory finish.

I'm not familiar with the paint schemes on any of Wolff's other planes but I too would be interested in finding out.

In Volume II of Neal O'Connor's "Aviation Awards" series, he mentions that Kurt flew a (deep?) purple Albatros D-type (III or V/Va).

Kind regards,

Reinout

Only pics I can immediately recall are the two in "Hunting w/Richthofen"- Hazlett's translation of the Bodenschatz diaries. One is a closeup of Fokker in the pilots seat, the other shows the whole aircraft. Unfortunately, these were supposedly taken when the plane was delivered. Who can, with certainty, be sure what other markings were added?

Wolff's first Albatros D-3 was red, trimmed in green. His next was all purple. He wnated his color to stand out as much as Richthofen's.
