Dear all,

I'm looking for book which describe most of the great, famous, exciting scenes of air battles in WWI. I like to read such stories, for example, deadly fighting match among Aces. Are there any books mention these stories? Of course if such a book describes the WWI action in time-line is much more appriciated. I perfer the book much more like legend, stories or fiction style than full of historical data, tables, etc. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Willy: I recommend my two books:
1) Frank Luke: The September Rampage, about the AOmerican ace who won the Medal of Honor (Price = $34.95) + $.25 S&H, and 2) Manfred von Richthofen: The Red Baron, about the Prussian ace with 80 victories. (Price = $19.95) + 4.25 S&H. That comes to $63.40 but you can take 20% off and send us $50.72 to the Info Devel Press, 32 Reilly Road, Lagrangeville, New York 12540. Thesne books give the details but they read like novels (almost). Best Wishes, Billy H./11/12/99.

I would recommend Cecil Lewis' "Sagitarius Rising." It is the autobiographical story of a 17 year old pilot joining the RFC in 1915 and serving troughout the war. He did quite a lot and saw a lot of the change and loss caused by the war. he also writes some of the best accounts of flying of the war.
On top of that he died only 2.5 years ago at the age of 97. As far as I can tell he was the last known surviving ace of the war.
It should be in your local library.

Enjoy,
Kirk Goolsby

Whoa! I cannot recommend "The Canvas Falcons" as it has a strong anti-military base in it and furthermore, the stories peresented in there are not history - there's a lot of fiction and rehashing of old rumours in that book. And what he has to say about the Germans is downright insulting. That has nothing to do with history, but everyting with hatred and bias.

Kind regards,

Reinout

I can't say for sure if I agree with Reinout on "Canvas Falcon" as I never got past chapter one. Even read as fiction it's a stinker. The recommendation of Sagitarius Rising is one with which we can all concur, but if it's boy's own comic book fiction you want, you can't go wrong with the first four Biggles books.

Well, I don't know if you can get them anymore but a lot of the old books written years ago by Quentin Reynolds, Arch Whitehouse and others were good reading, even if somewhat "fictional" and slanted.

One of my all time favorites still, even though the author acknowledged later it was pure wartime propaganda is Billy Bishop's Winged Warfare. But then, I am slightly biased.

If you can find it, Ace of the Iron Cross by Ernst Udet isn't too bad either. Although the last part is somewhat politically slanted. The last part was put there after his death by the Nazi party.

VBR,

Al Lowe
