Hi all,
I was curious, how many WWI soldiers are still alive? I know that in Belgium (my country) there is only 8 still here!
Thanks

Today's newspaper says that for Canada "less than 500". This probably includes veterans from Britain and other countries who immigrated after the War.

Today on CBC it was said approx 300 Canadian WWI veterans are still living. Next year that number will be considerably less. Salute to Kirk for his forethought and contribution to preserve the memories of the men who fought in the war to end all wars; so that those who died in it, might be remembered.

Greetings Wilkin: There are about 3,000 American veterans of WWI alive. The source for this was the administrator of the Castle Point VA Hoospital, Poughkeepsie, New York. That is out of the more than 4 million who served in that war. Billy H/11/11/99.

Two years ago, the French government decided to award the Légion d'Honneur to all surviving French WWI veterans. They were roughly 3000 at the time. Some LH were also given to allied veterans, British, Italians, Belgians, Americans, etc...

In Germany there are about 4000 veterans of WW1 still alive. The last holder of the Pour le Merite died the last year in february. He was 103 years old. His name was Ernst Jünger. During the war he served as Leutnant with Infantrie - Füsilierregiment 73 (Hannover). After the war he became a famous author. His best known book is "In Stahlgewittern. Aus dem Tagebuch eines Stoßtruppführers." (Storm of Steel).

With best regards, Immo Frese

I would definitely recommend reading Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger. It is a fantastic account of the life of an infantryman in the war.
As far as how many are still living today, there are very few. Last I heard there were 51 in Australia, that was in Feb. 1999. Certainly there are many fewer than 3000 Americans who made it to France. I would guess fewer than 1000. Last I heard there were 1100, but that was a year ago. Britain I heard 800, that was on Nov. 11, 1998. In Thailand there was one in Summer 1999.
Soon all will be gone. to show that point. On Nov. 11, 1998, there were 21 living Belgian vets. Now according to this posting there are 8.
