Under the aircraft statistic section of the Forum, there are listed the numbers of machines produced in each of the warring nations as well as their losses and numbers of planes on the Front in 1914 and 1918. The number of Austrian losses is not recorded nor is the number of planes at the front in 1918. I should also like to find out how many German planes were imported and to what extent the Russian Anatra bi-planes were used bu Austrian Forces. Of course, I would like to know the extent of Austrian losses 1914-1918 and the number of planes at the Front in 1918. Can anyone point the way.
Thanks
leo

Hallo Leo,
I found the following numbers. Groehler wrote in "Geschichte des Luftkriegs" (don't know his sources) AH had 48 aircraft, 1 airship and 12 balloons mobilised in 1914. He is also saying AH lost 360 airmen in WWI.
Herbert Molloy Mason wrote in "Die Luftwaffe", German, page 31 that after the end of the war Germany was still possesing 18,500 and AH was owning 1,279 aircraft and 3515 engines. Don't know how many of the latter were in active front service.
I remember that a number of 1,000 aircraft was exported by Germany to other neutral and alliied states. I would guess AH got the major share (800?) but maybe this number of 1000 is too low.
Source was maybe Neumann, don't remember.
Groehler gave also production numbers for AH:
1914: 70,
1915: 238,
1916: 931,
1917: 1714,
1918: 2438.
Alltogether 5,391.
Hope that helps.
VBR
Hannes

Jun 397 P + 267 O

Thank you for your information. I have been in contact with one of our Italian members of the Forum. He claims that the Italian Airforce claimed 400 Austrian victories, that did not include italian naval victories, and I have seen figures that the Brits claimed another 600. Paolo, our Italian correspondent figures the Brits got another 400. Any comments?
Thanks again

Leo,
Above the War Fronts said "The Italians found British claims to be out of proportion - 550 victories in a few months, against 633 Italian claims for the entire war - and could seldom find corrobation in the form of wrecks or aircrew."
Hope that helps. I take a break to fight my influenza.
VBR
