Michael is as perceptive as ever...
Mannock was driven by his own personal demons. He wasn't averse to promising to shoot down the odd pilot from his own squadron, if they looked "less than keen" in engaging the enemy!!
He also threatened to take a hatchet to a red-tabbed staff officer who showed up in the mess uninvited one day....Till he found out it was a Gunnery Officer, sent by Trenchard, to sort out Mannock's complaints about the Vicker's on their new SE5's!!..Seems Mick hated staff officers almost as much as he hated the Germans.
Regards
Paul

Hey, BT: Yep, I'm back. Took a breather on account of the less-than-salubrious atmosphere, but it's good to see things back to normal (or what passes for normal around here). I've heard nothing from Scott, but then I seldom have. It wouldn't surprise me if the demands of his job and the maintenance of this site don't leave a lot of free time.

Jenimuffin: such thoughts from such a pretty girl! Clearly you've watched "Lawrence of Arabia" too many times. Your homework assignment is to review "The Blue Max" and report on its social relevance to the '60s...

I doubt she got it from "Lawrence", it was handled very discretely. "Midnight Express" more likely. If Jenimuffin was a Canuck (our loss) I'd say she'd studied and watched Timothy Findlay's "The Wars".

SPIDER, - and Daniel Day Lewis
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't give Mannock an IRISH accent. He had an ENGLISH accent and spoke very correct, precise English.

Cheers, Brad
