I aquired a WWI cigarette box while in germany. It has the inscription on the back of OB Ltn Simons, Jasta II 14,2,1918. On the front there is a Pour le Merite. The curiosity is that there is also a copper Nieuport in the upper left corner. The Nieport has a skull inside a heart emblem on the fuselage with something undistinguishable on either side of the skull. Any idea which french pilot used this personalized symbol on his aircraft?

Nung. brought a Hanriot over here in the early twenties. It is still in existence at the Chino Air Museum. It featured the mentioned insignia when I last saw it several years ago. I believe it may have been painted since then in U.S. Navy colors for purposes of exhibit at a local U.S. Navy base air show. (El Toro or Mirimar?). The Navy operated them a bit in WWI. If they painted it I hope it was washable and didn't effect the original art work. VBR. LEB

The former MCAS El Toro (Los Angeles area) museum is relocating to MCAS (formerly NAS) Miramar at San Diego. No Hanriot at either location, but I'll certainly provide an update if that bird turns up!

There is a HD-1 at Pensacola where you might expect to find a HD-2. Could this be the one?
