I checked a book last weekend, one that my mother swears by. Unfortunately, it's of the popular-scientific nature, meaning that there aren't any sources.

Anyway, it said that traditionally, the arrow in the eye was the way Harold's life ended, but that it was more likely that he died by a swordstroke of a Norman knight. But no sources so we're really not much further.
