I'm interested to find out which American squadron this insignia belonged to. It appears to be an eagle in flight, holding a bomb in it's talons. The plane is a DH4 with the name "KATHLEEN" painted on the nose. I'm thinking if it is in fact a bomb, that it probably was the first a/c insignia to use one as a design element.
Man! I just love the HTML formatting capability of this forum

278th Aero Squadron (Flying Owl): It was a U. S. Army Air Service observation squadron. The squadron was assigned to the 7th Corps Observation Group, 2nd Army, on October 29, 1918. It reached the Front at Toul on November 10, 1918 and was demobilized May 11, 1919.

Thx Cliff! No wonder the pilot and observer in the photo looked so calm, the war was over! But seriously, when I magnified the photo my first impression was that it WAS an owl, but thought naaaa...its just a badly painted eagle. So is what it's holding a telescope then? Thx again, all you guys in this forum are great. Who needs a library anymore?

Hi!

Dad flew DH4 with 18 squadron. I wonder if that
is the same ensignia? He had 9 victories with
the the DH4 before transfering to Bristols. They
say he flew a "4" like a "pup". I wish I knew
to ask him what colors he used.
Good find!

Yes, that is a telescope the owl is carrying.

My Gallery
18RAF DH4s had a white "square" aft of roundel. I have many markings for US and RAF DH4's.
