In reading the last few threads today, everyone seems to have a question. So here's mine.
Did the Sopwith Triplane and Fokker Dr1 ever meet in air combat? The months of service for each a/c overlap, therefore it would, technically, have been possible, but somehow I doubt it ever happened. Anybody care to confirm this, yea or nay?

I never heard of any occasions, but that is a fascinating question.

I agree, it is a fascinating question, one which I've often wondered about but never really found any information on.
Sorry.
But seeing as the Sopwith Triplane was "replaced" with the Sopwith Camel around that time leads one to believe that the Camel was considered superiour, though Werner Voss shot down a few Camels in his DR1.

I cant help but think Voss' early success was due in part that allied pilots seeing a Dr1 (on their six), thought it was a Tripe (until it was too late). Very effective camoflage

If the Sopwith Tripe was removed from service, I would think Allied pilots would be aware of that fact. They also might know that Jerry had a triplane or was British intelligence not on the ball with Central Powers aircraft types?

The Dr1 was introduced while the Tripe was still in service. Furthermore I do recall reading that some allied airmen were caught napping by Dreidekers. I wonder if any of those who managed to tell-the-tale admitted to this faux-pas in their combat reports?

Rosebud;
This is a great question! The Sopwith Tripe was being phased out at the time the first two Fokker Dr-1s were introduced. I think the only squadron still flying the Tripe was No.10 Navel.
There were only a few Fokkers at the front before the type was grounded. They were grounded for wing failures and not permitted back into service until December 1917. It was also in December of that year that No.10 traded it's Tripes in for Camels.

Hi
Also the French Naval Squadron at Dunqerque returned their last Triplanes(6) to the British in late 1917.
Ref Lucien Morareu in this Forum 15 Sept 1999.

So....we can safely conclude that the window of opportunity for the two to meet was approx 6 weeks. Mid August till the end of September 1917. Now if someone can physically place the squadrons in relation to each other; ie. Naval 10 and any other allied squads vs. the Jasta(s) that first recieved the DR1 before it was recalled; we could determine whether they were in range of each other's patrol areas. Anyone care to take a shot at that one?

Richard,
Give me some time to contemplate that.
