G'day all,

Some sad news, Herbert "Mick" Hollingsworth, my states (New South Wales) last Light Horseman died on October 1st, he was 101 years old.

In Australia we have only 3 of the Light Horse left, 2 in Victoria and 1 in South Australia.

On a brighter note another WW1 vet Mr Ted Smout aged 101 has now joined the push for Australia to become a republic. He stated in the paper that he became a republican "on the spot" when he was frisked at Heathrow Airport in the aliens queue last year after his medals set off the metal detectors.

This is the same bloke who was fined and sent to England because he went AWOL on Armistace Day, I believe he spent 3 days in Paris liberating the ladies. His punishment was to help process the backlog of paper work. As luck would have it, he came across his own charge sheet stating that he be fined a months pay, well the charge sheet never saw the light of day after that and Ted got his pay.

Two gallant men, one now with his mates and the other trying to shape Australia's history like he did 80 odd years ago.

Regards,
Andrew

When i was young in the 1940's 50' and 60's there were many of the vets from WWI in Pittsburgh. Not only were there the doughboys, you could turn up veterans from almost any armed force that participated in the war. There was a Krieger Hall and a Bulgarian-Macedonian Club and many others where these old warriors hung out and talked to some degree about the old days. I wish I had a time machine to go back and record some of those conversations. Wouldn't that be grand?

Andrew,
I have not been on the Aerodrome recently, but you may remember me. I have been seeking out and interviewing WWI vets for the last few years. My goal has been first to preserve the accounts they have. Next I would like to put together a documentary so all people can appreciate what the WWI generation went through.
I was hoping you could contact me, and let me know where you get your information on Aussie vets from. I have found it very hard to track down vets there.
I have heard about Ted Smout for two years now and have long wished I could go to Australia to meet him and Eric Abraham, another WWI vet. It is good to hear Mr. Smout is still going strong. Do you know anything about Mr. Abraham? I have not heard from him. Is he still living?

I will look forward to hearing from you.
