In the book Under the Guns of the Red Baron there is a picture of the Balkenkreuze that was cut from MvR's downed plane. The book states that the insignia from the right side of the plane was auctioned off in London in 1994. Does anyone know how much it was sold for and who bought it?

Hi Phil,

Just wandering through some old posts and spotted yours. Some things I can tell you about the 425/17 fabric are;

Alex Imrie headed up the authentication of the fabric. He has many very large prints of the fabric sample, and studied it in detail. I believe they did some chemical analysis, and possibly dating, I don't know if it was carbon-14, but it was done scientifically.

The fabric didn't sell at the auction. After the auction a deal was made by a fellow out of Georgia. I believe he paid $25,000. I know that is expensive, but I think worth the investment.

I can't believe a high rolling German or a German corporation didn't step up and buy the thing for the "Fatherland". I may be able to find out more about who purchased it, but I'm not certain. You could contact Imrie. I have his address, and have visited him personally, and correspond with him reguarly.

Best Wishes,
Dave Watts
