I was today p.m. digging in the archivs and found a document of July 1918 dealing with the future demobilisation (NOT mobilisation!). Surprisingly the document mentioned repaetedly that certain units would become part of the Royal Saxon Jagdgeschwader 8. I think this unit did never really start to exist. I have also heard only about 4 existing JGs. If the Saxons should form a #8 - who would create #5,6 and 7 and where? I believe Württemberg could form another JG too.
Who has ever heard about plans to form JG 5-8?

Dear Hannes,

After the first three JG's, a Bavarian JG was created in 1918. That year also saw the creation of a Marine JG, so maybe that was counted as the 5th? Then there's still the two other JG's. Saxony was the 3rd entity in the Empire so it would only be logical to form their JG after Bavaria and before Württemberg. I don't know how many Jastas Württemberg had, but they could have had as few as four, so a JG -while possible- may not be so likely.

Kind regards,

Reinout

Reinout,

you are right - the kingdom Württemberg was only #4 in the pecking order behind Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony but had enough squadrons to form a Jagdgeschwader (maybe JG 9?).

JG 8 should contain Jasta 21, 22, 24 and 40. The first hint in this document is from December 1917 or January 1918 (not July 18).
