Landsman For Quartermaster--what was it?

This was the rank of Charles Hammann, Naval Aviator and first American Airman to win the Medal of Honor.
What was it? It sounds like a warrant rank, or officer candidate, a holdover from the old Navy. Other aviators held it--what was their place in the service, officer or enlisted?

Quartermaster is an enlisted rank, responsible for maintaining and supplying items for daily use. An officer with that responsibility is the Supply Officer, but it's a job assignment.
The Army used to have a "Quartermaster" corps, now I believe it's been "Supply Corps" for a long time.
The term itself comes from the title of the person responsible for the physical maintenance and provisions in living areas (quarters).

In the Navy a Quartermaster would be an expert in navigation and start out as a helmsman.

Thanks for the correction re the Navy. I should have remembered that difference, but it's been 35 years.
But Navy Quartermaster is a petty officer rating, just to be clear on rank.

Landsman for Quartermaster was a rate given to an enlisted man who served on a warship without prior naval training. Usually such men were volunteers whose service lasted only thru the war.
Hammann wore an officer's uniform in Italy.
